Default Why is Guild wars free? BF2 isn't

Guild Wars is "monthly-fee-free". Why do you think that is? I think it's free for several reasons, all speculation.

On a side note, Battlefield 2 costs $512/mo out of your pocket if you want to host a 64 player server. That's gives roughly the idea of the cost involved to hosting 10's of thousands of friendly and considerate players that is the Guild Wars community.

Anyone know real reasons from ANet as to why it's free? Are future expansions going to remain free or will The Day come?

Easy question. It's free because it's not really a MMO. Basicly, it's Diablo II on a higher standard. The social servers are no more than a virtual chat room, and all the actual fighting is done on personal playing fields that run off of your own PC and friend's PC. The servers are mainly used just for the social areas that GW has, and at that, it splits them up into districts to keep it lag free.

Battlefield 2 is free monthly, unless you wanna run a server, which is pointless unless your making a buisness out of it. Then again, almost all of the big games cost to host a server. Counter-Strike, AVP2.. all those games require cash if you want to have an offical server.

BF2 is free. Nobody's forcing you to host any servers. It's just how it is with any competitive online game.

GW is not the type of game to have fees, the max people per party is 8 so they don't need to add fees, Anet says they will keep this game free, i don't really understand everything about it, but its free so it makes me and mr wallet happy

err $512 a month? are you sure about that?

Yea, I play a little BF2. That makes sense anyhow at that rate Guild Wars will never cost a monthly fee.

Future updates will cost such as Chapter 2, but they're not required to continue to play. Those updates will just make your personal playing field larger.

Plus it will only cost money to BUY expansions, you still won't have to pay monthly fees for them.

As people have said you don't need to host a server to play online, and BF2 servers don't cost $512 a month, our server can host multiple games (I think up to 4 while still keeping good performance), we've got a Day of Defeat 32 man and a BF2 64 man on the same main server, and I *think* the cost is around $250 a month including possibly website costs and what such, not sure about that though...it's in that general ballpark unless the conversation in which I was told the price was a dream. I think you do need to pay extra shit for a ranked server though, but it still shouldn't be...$512 a month.

Guild is free. But will cost $50 and every 6months there will be an expansion so really it does cost a bit.But it is cheaper than other online games. But in aus. When u add up all the expansions its kinda like online fees wen u think bout it.

Well monthly fees are forced off you so you can continue while an update isnt. Which is alot better.

Now wait...from reading this -- are the EXPANSIONS monthly-fee charged, or am I just reading this wrong? You first have to BUY the EXPANSION, but then the game is still FREE monthly, aye?

Jesus, I sound like such a noob, but I'm serious...

Once you leave a city, unless in a group you will be alone. As someone mentioned before, the most you can travel with is 8. That's hardly MMO.

other than no monthly fee, WoW owns GW in every facet of the game.
